In addition to housing the Museum of Islamic Ceramics, the Gezira Art Center in Cairo's fashionable Zamalek area includes four galleries for rotating exhibits, a gallery for temporary exhibits, a cinema, lecture theatre and an open-air theatre. This important venue displays more than 10,000 paintings and sculptures that represent the development of the Egyptian art movement from the pioneers of the early 20th century to today. Among the most celebrated artists on display are Mahmoud Mokhtar (the first sculptor in the modern Egyptian art movement), Mohammed Nagui, Youssef Kamel (an Impressionist artist who studied Egyptian countryside and traditional markets), Ragheb Ayyad (known for his coloured cartoons), Ahmad Sabri (the pioneer of Egyptian portrait art) and Mahmoud Said.
